If the Muppets didn't teach us anything else, the show at least taught us that there's always a critic who is ready to pounce on your every move regardless of what it is. The challenge of following God's direction and leading is that critics get in the way. David was not exempt from this as he had to deal with even those closest to him (his brothers) accusing him of having selfish motives in his desire to fight Goliath. I almost titled this post "Ignoring the Critics" because that's what David need to and did do. However, there are times when we need to listen to our critics, too. There are times when we need the wisdom to hear what they have to say and pick out the nuggets of insight that they have to offer. Critics aren't always easy to listen to – which is why we often do our best to silence them. And while sometimes they don't have the best motives themselves, they can still help us to learn the lesson that God wants to teach. You will always have a critic, and the wise person learns to listen for the insights and to place the rest in the circular file.
