In our scientific world we find it hard sometimes to believe in anything that isn’t tangible, measurable, or observable. Therefore, the spiritual can be relegated to the impossible or the non-existent. However, we can probably all relate to a certain understanding of the spiritual world, whether we choose to believe in it or not. For instance, have you ever committed to “never doing that thing again?” Maybe it was a bad habit or a group of friends or even a certain place where you knew you shouldn’t go. What’s interesting is that as soon as you made that commitment, something came along in the way of temptation immediately after you made your decision, and the timing was all too perfect to suck you back in again. I heard a speaker once sharing about a decision he made that he would never look at pornography again. It had been a temptation for him, and he knew that he needed to rid it from his life. Oddly enough, later that day or the next he was on a plane, and sitting in the seatback in front of him was a Playboy magazine. Is that coincidence? Stuff like that happens so often that it can’t be just coincidence. Paul reminded the church at Ephesus that they were in the midst of a spiritual battle – that they had an adversary, the devil, who was fighting against them with his minions. That same devil is fighting against us, and he’s using every means possible to bring us down. Thankfully, he’s not stronger than our heavenly Father. There is a spiritual realm, and in that realm a battle is raging. The good news is that we don’t have to be afraid because, as I wrote about yesterday, we can pray for strength from the Spirit. Remember that you’re in a battle, and be encouraged that you don’t have to fight it alone!
