Awakening Love (Song of Solomon 1-4)

November 16, 2013 By Seth Leave a Comment

Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires. (Song of Solomon 2:7b)

There is a danger in awakening love too early or too quickly.  Even so, our culture is bent on encouraging people to awaken love at a rapid pace, in search of the perfect relationship or in search simply of pleasure.

How often in our culture are people guilty of awakening love too quickly?  How often do people rush into relationships based on an emotion and then flee from the relationship once the euphoria is gone?  If only they waited to awaken love at the proper time.  And yet, the number of people who have suffered from awakening love too early is great.

What if, rather than awakening love prematurely, we began praying that God would help us to awaken it at its proper time?  What if we began praying that God would allow us to experience purity in love rather than simply seeking love for the sake of love?

When I worked with teenagers, I encouraged them to pray for purity in their relationships.  Even after marriage, a prayer for purity is a wise prayer to pray as we pursue relationships that are glorifying to the Lord.

God in every relationship I have, please give me purity.  Help me to honor you with my actions and with my words.  Help me not to awaken love until the proper time so that when that moment comes You will be glorified.
