Freedom (2 Kings 12-13; 2 Chronicles 24)

December 13, 2007 By Seth Leave a Comment

I spent some time today preparing for my lesson on Sunday night with the high school students.  This week we're looking at the concept that maximum freedom comes under God's authority.  I thought about that in relation to today's reading.  Israel faced a lot of stuff during this period of history, and most of the trials they dealt with were as a result of failing to submit to God's authority.  Why is it that we feel we can offer ourselves more freedom than God can offer us?  Since Adam and Eve indulged in the forbidden fruit, humans have bought into the lie that God is all about rules and that His rules squelch fun.  The kings of Israel who realized that freedom comes by submitting to God experienced prosperous times, and kings who did not learn that lesson led their people into suffering and bondage for many generations.  When we submit to God, we will experience true freedom.
