How to Love God (1 Kings 3-4; 2 Chronicles 1)

November 15, 2013 By Seth Leave a Comment

Solomon showed his love for the Lord by walking according to the instructions given him by his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places. (1 Kings 3:3)

Sometimes it’s hard to know how to love a God we cannot see, feel, or touch.  God’s invisible qualities make it challenging to even remember that His presence is with us.  With all of these difficulties, how do we even begin to express our love to Him?

One of the keys to answering that question is found in Solomon’s life, as the author of 1 Kings recorded it.  The way Solomon showed his love for the Lord was by walking according to the Lord’s commands.  It’s that simple.

When we choose to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to the Lord, then we express our love to Him in the process of being obedient.

Consider how this works with children and parents.  If you are a parent, one of the ways your children honor you and show their love for you is by obeying whatever it is that you ask of them.  Obedience conveys love because it reveals the heart of a person.  When our hearts love the Lord, we will express our love through our obedience.

That leaves us with two questions.  First, do you love the Lord?  Secondly, are you living in obedience to Him?  One of the best ways you can express your love is to obey His instructions.

Lord, thank You for loving me and sending Your son, Jesus, to die for me.  I love You, and I want to express that love through the way that I live.  In moments when my behavior doesn’t match up to the character You desire for me, please correct me gently, and encourage me toward Godly living.  Let my life reflect my profound love for You.
