“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!” (Luke 12:27-28)
I tend to be a futuristic thinker. By that I mean I typically am not consumed with what happened in the past, nor am I focused on the moment. Instead, I tend to think about what will come. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing until it comes at the cost of “treasuring the moment.”
I’m not a “stop and smell the roses” sort of guy; I’m more of a “let’s see if we can beat the old record for getting there” sort of guy. I’m always thinking about what’s next rather than what is. Jesus’ comments were directed towards people like me. The reality is that my focus on tomorrow can result in a lack of enjoyment of today. I can be so future-thinking that I forget that today is the only moment that I am guaranteed of having. After all, something very tragic could happen to me at any moment. It’s only by God’s grace that I am here now breathing and that I drive to and from work each day in safety.
I don’t need to worry about where my clothes or food will come from tomorrow because I know my Heavenly Father takes cares of flowers and animals, and I am of even more value than they. This does not give me the freedom to squander what I’ve been given and to be foolish (certainly Jesus spoke of the importance of good stewardship of possessions), but it does challenge me to enjoy each step of the journey while I can. Are you enjoying today?
Lord, thank You for the reminder that I don’t need to worry about tomorrow and that I can enjoy today. Keep me from being so forward thinking that I fail to experience what You’re doing in the here and now and how You provide so graciously and generously for me.
