You ‘ re responsible for your pits (Exodus 21-22)

September 6, 2007 By Seth 2 Comments

Donkey_falling I think some of the funniest verses from the Old Testament exist in the passages for today's reading.  If you happen to dig a pit, and if your neighbor's donkey or ox happens to fall into said pit, then you are responsible for replacing the donkey or ox.  What this really comes down to is the importance of being responsible for what you do.  Wouldn't we all be better off if we were more responsible?  If we dig a hole, then we should be repsonsible for what happens as a result of that hole.  If we disrespect someone, then we should be responsible for our actions.  Too often in our culture we like to "pass the buck" and shirk any kind of responsibility for our actions.  From the earliest days of God's involvement in Israel's activities, the word was: you are responsible for your actions.  The same is true for us today.

The kids and I got a huge giggle out of the picture today! It was good for them to have this giggle after having to listen to all of those rules! Isn’t it wonderful that we have rules, though? We don’t have to wonder what what we’re suppose to do if our neighbor’s donkey falls into our pit! I don’t know about you, but I’m glad we have that cleared up!
