In the book of James we learn that God does not tempt people but people are tempted by their own evil desires. There are several examples of God testing people, however, and one of those is found in 2 Chronicles 32 where Hezekiah was tested by God to see what was in his heart. Did God really not know what was in his heart? That's doubtful since God is omniscient (all-knowing). So why did God test him, and does God ever test us? Perhaps God tested Hezekiah so Hezekiah would see what was in His own heart. Sometimes we are blinded by sin and we need to have our eyes opened. The sad part of this story is that Hezekiah's pride caused him to care very little about the results of his sin since he wouldn't be alive to experience them. This leads me to examine my own life: would I recognize a heart test, and would I pass? God does test His people from time to time, and I hope I am humble enough to accept whatever the results show and to use them as motivation to grow.
