A Recurring Death (2 Corinthians 1-4)

Death is somewhat depressing.  I think funerals are one of the things I like the least in life because they are so often a moment when one is forced to evaluate his or her own life.  There is one funeral, however, that each one of us should attend on a daily basis: our own.  That sounds kind of morbid, but it accurately reflects the words of Paul who said that we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake (2 Corinthians 4:11a).  See, as long as we are living, then our lives revolve around us: what we hope, what we desire, how we want to live.  But when we die to ourselves and put those desires and hopes to rest, we allow Christ to live within us.  We cannot be fully possessed by him as long as we have some kind of an interest in the game because our interests are selfish and not God-honoring.  So those who follow Christ – those who are His disciples – make it their goal to die every day for His sake.  In so doing, they are getting out of His way and allowing Him to work through them for His glory.  Did you die today?
