And [David] became more and more powerful, because the Lord God Almighty was with him. (2 Samuel 5:1-10)
A very stark contrast existed between King David and King Saul as it came to God’s presence in their leadership. The difference between the two men was that David sought to bring glory to the Lord and Saul sought to bring glory to himself. Since David’s efforts were directed at the Lord, his work prospered under God’s hand.
God’s presence guided David’s leadership, and though his life was not marked by perfection (after all, whose life is marked by perfection?), God guided and brought Israel into a new era of recognizing the Lord and submitting themselves to Him. Spiritual leaders will always bring their followers into a recognition of and a submission to the Lord. And when they do that, God’s hand will be upon all that they do.
Are you in a role of spiritual leadership? Are you seeking to enable your followers to more fully submit to the Lord’s leading in their lives? If not, then you’re missing what God desires both in your leadership and in the people whom you’re leading.
Father, help me to be a leader who points people to You. As David led Israel toward You, let me follow in his footsteps. Allow those I lead to know this is the desire of my heart, and honor this desire in their lives – enabling all of us to submit to You more and more every day.
