I can’t help but feel sorry for the women who get caught up in the sad situation that Laban has created and that Jacob has sustained. The constant desire to get pregnant and to please their husband leads the two sisters to go so far as offering their servants to Jacob to bear children in their place (a déjà vu to Abraham and Sarah). What a tragedy! It’s not hard to understand why the children of Jacob end us as dysfunctional as they do because the modeling of a strong family is not evidenced by the parents. To top all of this, Rachel steals her father’s household gods – the things believed to bring wealth and prosperity to her family. This doesn’t seem like the type of family I would expect to lead a nation. I guess this is another example of the enormity of God’s grace to people who are completely undeserving of it.
