I think that temptation is one of the greatest arguments for the existence of God. Survival of the fittest says that I’m trying as hard as possible to survive. If that’s the case, then why do I do things that hurt me? Why do I give in to temptations that cause me pain and grief and can ultimately cause me physical harm? It just doesn’t make sense. The fact that every one of us is tempted to do something we know we ought not do is and of in itself an argument for the existence of God. Paul, in his writing to the Corinthian church, introduced some good news about temptation: we don’t have to give in to it. Temptation isn’t stronger than we are, and we don’t have to submit. To the contrary, God provides a way out so that we can survive through it. The next time you face temptation, a great prayer to pray is, “God, please give me strength to hold fast, and help me to see the escape from this temptation.” When you pray that, God is faithful to provide a way out.
