He who forms the mountains, who creates the wind, and who reveals his thoughts to mankind, who turns dawn to darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth— the Lord God Almighty is his name. (Amos 4:13)
There’s a great scene at the end of “The Wizard of Oz” where Dorothy and her friends finally make it to the Emerald City. They had been on the hunt for the Wizard, and they finally found him – only to be disappointed that this all-powerful Wizard was nothing more than a middle-aged man. They want to know who could help them, but the Wizard seemed to fall short.
In some sense, we’re all looking for the “Wizard,” so to speak. We’re looking for the one who created this world, who placed us here, and who can somehow remedy our inability to be at peace with ourselves. I don’t necessarily know you, but I know this about you: you have regret in your life. There is something you’ve done in the past or that you’re engaged in now, and you wish you could turn back the clock to change it. The problem is that you can’t. You probably even promised yourself that you’d never make the same mistake again – you’d never go to that place, go out with that person, or say those things. But you did. You set a law for yourself, and you broke it. Not intentionally. You broke your own law because you seemingly couldn’t do anything else. Now you’ve lost your peace. Maybe not every day – but many days. When the memories return and the consequences become evident, you realize just how not at peace you are.
If that’s you, then I want to introduce you to someone. He’s the One who formed the mountains – the visible things of this world. He’s the One who created the wind – the invisible things of this world. He desired to know you, so He revealed His thoughts to mankind – He did not create the world and choose to remain silent. His Name? It’s the Lord God Almighty. He loves you so much He sent His son to die in your place – to create a way for you to have both peace with yourself and peace with God. The Lord God Almighty is His Name. Give your life to Him, and you will find peace.
Father God, You are the only One who can help me find peace. No matter how hard I try, I can never live up to even the laws that I set for myself. I need You. Thank You for the gift of Jesus and for the forgiveness that I find in Him. Thank You that, through Him, I can find peace with myself and peace with You.
