As the temple was being rebuilt, the builders reached a milestone of completing the foundation. Some were filled with joy, but others were filled with sorrow. Those filled with sorrow realized how insignificant this new temple was compared with the old one. But those filled with joy understood the significance of rebuilding Israel. One group of people was stuck in the past, but another group of people accepted the past and looked to a brighter future. It's easy to judge those who are living in the past, but we, too, can be guilty of doing the same whenever something new comes along or whenever something tragic occurs. But to live in the past is to ignore the reality of the present. Today is what it is, and all we can do is move forward from where we are with what we have. The truth is, much time that could have been used for reshaping the future has been wasted dreaming about the past. Our responsibility is to live in the day that we've been given and to use it for the glory of God. What are you doing with today?
