Today we took a trip to Recife to pick someone up from the airport. The weather here has been very rainy since we arrived on Sunday. Honestly, I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen so much rain in my life! From the moment we stepped out of the plane there has been nothing but torrential downpours with a few breaks for 20-30 minutes or so every once in a while.
After picking our new friend up from the airport, we went to lunch with a group of people who want to help plant the church in Recife. We really enjoyed the opportunity to meet them and are looking forward to getting to know them better in the future.
On our way back to Carpina the rain really picked up, and the streets were terribly flooded. A trip that normally takes only one hour took us over four! At one point we were at a standstill for an hour and half and could feel water sloshing around under the car. The people here tell us that Recife was built on a swamp, which is one reason why the flooding has been so bad.
What made this experience even funnier is that Kari was holding a dog cage in her lap for the whole four hour trip. Our friend, Paul, had just picked it up in Recife, and it didn’t fit in the trunk! So Kari held that thing for four hours! Just for the record, I did offer to hold it more than once. Thankfully, we made it home safely. We’re definitely looking forward to a break in the rain, though!
