About three years ago, I invited LifePoint Church to join me in chronologically reading through the Bible in a year, which was the inspiration for starting this blog. It was such a great experience that I've decided to do it again starting on August 1. Would you like to join me? If you're going to read along, please comment here so I know who ... The Waiting Game…
There’s a plane flying right now , but we’re not on it (well, there are actually lots of planes flying, and we’re not on any of them). Unfortunately we’re still waiting on our visas to be approved so we can go back to what we were doing. We would greatly appreciate it if you would think of us. We hope the visas are approved in the next few weeks. ... [Continue Reading]
Getting to Know Brazilians
Over the past several weeks Kari and I have had a really good opportunity to make some Brazilian friends and experience the hospitality of this beautiful country. Last week a friend, Leo, who owns his own hair salon, invited us to come over for dinner and to watch a movie with him. We had pizza and cocada - an amazing Brazilian dessert that is made by cooking ... [Continue Reading]
The Place Called Beautiful
Okay, so “Beautiful” isn’t exactly the right translation, but it sounds better than “Pretty.” Last Thursday Kari and I went on field trip with the kids from the International School to a town called Bonito, which translated, means “pretty.” The reason for the name has to do with several waterfalls in the area. We started off in a beautiful Catholic ... [Continue Reading]
Coke… we NEED Coke!
The International School went back into session this week, and Kari and I are both teaching. Kari is teaching both English and Music, and I am teaching two classes of English to the older students. I have found that the Brazilian Coke tastes much better than the American Coke, and drinking it out of a bottle tastes even better! Thankfully I have had a ... [Continue Reading]
A Surprise Teaching Experience
Last night I had one of the funniest teaching experiences I’ve ever had! I was invited the week prior to speak at this “youth” service and to share on 1 Samuel 3:10. I should have known things weren’t going to be as I expected when our driver showed up wearing a suit. I was wearing jeans and a polo, and I asked if I should change ... [Continue Reading]
The Joys of Learning Flexibility
Today we had several of our items for the apartment delivered. You can see Pastor Ricardo and me working at putting together our kitchen cabinets. When we purchased them, we were told what it would cost to have them assembled, but when we called to schedule the assembly, the price had more than doubled! We decided to save our money and to figure it out ... [Continue Reading]
Getting Settled
Kari and I have been busy trying to get settled here in Brazil. Three students from LifePoint left on Saturday, so now it feels like we’re here to stay! We were able to find a really nice apartment for a reasonable price and have spent the last week or so purchasing furniture and appliances. We made a video tour of the apartment that you can see ... Medical Clinics
Today was the last of the medical clinics. Last Saturday we were joined by Dr. Chuck Taylor, several of his family members, and others from the United States to offer free medical clinics in the area. For three days we set up shop in various locations and helped diagnose medical issues and give free prescriptions along with vitamins, Tylenol, ... [Continue Reading]
English Camp
We just finished English Camp today! English Camp is a program for students at the International School where they come and have an opportunity to learn more English in a VBS-style setting. The theme of the week was, “Whose Team Are You On?” We focused on the ideas that the most important thing about a person is whose team he decides to be on. ... [Continue Reading]
